The RCMP in New Brunswick is reminding drivers to take precautions when driving through construction zones.

With heavier traffic during the summer months and an increase of road work and construction zones, police urge motorists to stay alert and follow the posted speed limits. Drive carefully, minimize distractions, and watch for detours or lane diversions.

Cst. Derek Black said, "Any speed beyond the posted limit is dangerous for drivers and for the people working.”

The reduced speed limits are in effect 24 hours a day and 7 days a week – even if workers are not present.

Speeding fines are doubled when travelling through a construction zone, Black said. If the driver is going less than 25 km/h over the speed limit, fines are $340.50, between 26 km/h and 50 km/h, over the speed limit, the fine is $580.50 and if speeding 50 km/h over the speed limit, the fine is $1204.50.
