Recently I was driving in New Hampshire and saw a car with a really cool front license plate.

No, it was not a vanity plate, but rather a cool picture with some snarky words related to whatever kind of sports car it was.

At first, I thought, "Oh, that's cool. I want to put something like that on my front Jeep license plate..."

Then I thought, "Wait, is that legal?"

Like everything, I turned to my trusted friend Google. Are you required to have a front and a back license plate?

I found out, according to a Thompson Law article, that not all 50 states require two license plates. In fact, only 29 states require both a front and a back plate.

That leaves the other 21 states only to require one.

Unfortunately for New Englanders, we do not fall into a "two license plates are optional" state.

Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont all require a front and a back plate.

There is one exception, at least for Maine and New Hampshire.

According to a Way article, motorcyclists in New Hampshire and Maine only require one rear license plate. So you could have a fun decal in the front of your bike in those states...

Not Massachusetts, however. In MA, all vehicles, including motorcycles, are required to have both a front and back plate.
