Death of Fort Kent Man Deemed a Homicide
State Police say they are conducting a homicide investigation in the death of a Fort Kent man whose body was found Sunday in a basement apartment.
At approximately 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Fort Kent police responded to a 911 call at an apartment building on 485 West Main Street in Fort Kent, according to Lt. Troy Gardner of the Maine State Police. An officer arrived to find a deceased male in one of the basement apartments.
The building was secured and the Maine State Major Crimes Unit was contacted. Uniform personnel from Troop F also responded to assist with the scene security, Gardner said. A team of Detectives and Evidence Response Technicians arrived in Fort Kent late in the day and began their investigation.
The deceased was identified as 49-year-old Daren Charette who lived in the apartment building. The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta where an autopsy was conducted on Monday.
At this point, police know that Charette died as a result of a single gunshot wound, Lt. Gardner said.
Detectives say they have talked to a person who was allegedly involved in the shooting. They do not believe that there is an ongoing threat to the public. No charges have been filed yet.
The Maine Attorney General’s office is also involved in the active homicide investigation.
