Have You Ever Been to the ‘Creepiest’ Ghost Town in Maine?
This abandoned place in our Pine Tree State is gaining national attention as one of America's creepiest and coolest ghost towns.
Maine is full of spooky places, and it makes sense why! Stephen King got much of his inspiration from our state and set several of his famous horror novels here. From creepy lighthouses to abandoned towns, there’s no shortage of eerie spots that could be straight out of a King book.
But who is deciding and determining which place in Maine is the coolest and creepiest?
Thrillist’s report on ‘The Creepiest, Coolest Ghost Town in Every State’ highlights the growing popularity of ghost towns in the U.S. as unique tourist destinations. These towns, often frozen in time, showcase the remnants of once-thriving communities. Each state's ghost towns have their own distinctive stories, making them captivating spots for curious travelers.
Now that we've covered that, where in Maine can you find this eerie, yet fascinating ghost town?
According to Thrillist and their report highlighting ‘The Creepiest, Coolest Ghost Town in Every State,’ the pick for Maine is Perkins Township, an abandoned ‘unorganized territory’ in Sagadahoc County. Thrillist had this to say about their ‘Vacationland’ selection:
Swan Island is the main feature of Perkins Township, a ghost town in the Kennebec River that's only accessible by kayak, canoe, or a five-minute ferry ride. Once inhabited by Native Americans, later used by explorers for farming and ice harvesting, and eventually popularized as a summer getaway (even visited by Aaron Burr and Benedict Arnold), Perkins underwent several phases before the 20th century. In the early 1900s, the town was disincorporated, and following the Great Depression and increased pollution in the Kennebec River, its usefulness vanished, leaving the nature-rich island practically vacant by the 1940s.
Thrillist continues by explaining that nearly a century later, visitors still camp, hike, hunt, fish, and explore structures dating back to the 1700s.
In addition to these activities, adventurers can experience the peaceful surroundings while also appreciating the region's historical significance.
What are your thoughts on Thrillist’s pick for the creepiest, coolest ghost town in Maine?
