It was a scary evening for a Bangor mother whose car was stolen while her child slept in the backseat.

Bangor Police Say the Car Theft Was First Reported As a Kidnapping

Bangor Police Sergeant Jason McAmbley says the original dispatch report identified the incident as a kidnapping in Bangor but, when officers investigated, correctly identified it as an attempted car theft. The mother called the police to her home on Blue Hill East just before 8:00 Saturday night, telling them her vehicle had been stolen from her driveway. She had been carrying groceries into the residence, while her child slept in the backseat of the car. But after a trip into the house, the woman discovered her vehicle was gone.

Officers began searching the area while other officers took the woman's statement. A short time later, the vehicle was found in the middle of an intersection, running and abandoned with the child safe and still sleeping soundly in his safety seat in the back.
