Maine authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a 4-year-old boy bringing a loaded pistol with him to his preschool.

According to reports, a faculty member at Rollins Family Child Care in Hallowell discovered a loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun earlier last month in the boy’s overnight bag. That’s when the situation was first made known to authorities. Police Chief Eric Nason says that the incident could have become tragic because even though the safety was on, there was a bullet in the chamber.

Police say that the gun belongs to the boys’ father, who claims the last time he seen the firearm, it was in the side pocket of his truck. While there are currently no charges being pursued, the district attorney’s office has asked for more information as a means to decide whether charges could be sought.
