34-Year-Old Man Died after Officer-Involved Shooting in Maine
A 34-year-old man died after an officer-involved shooting in Westbrook on Saturday morning.
Man was Hurting Mother in Home
The Westbrook Police Department said Ryan Nichols was fatally shot around 3:30 am after officers responded to a call that Nichols was hurting his mother inside the home.
Mental Illness and Warrants
Officers were informed that Nichols had a mental illness, said WGME News. Nichols also had an active felony warrant.
Assaulted Officers and Fled
Nichols assaulted police when officers tried to take him into custody. He fled on foot to a neighbor's home.
Police Used Less Lethal Weapons
Police said officers used less lethal weapons to try and stop him.
Man had Metal Object and Ignored Commands
Nichols then approached police with a metal object and did not listen to officers commands to stop.
Shot and Died
He was shot by two officers and died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
