Home Movie Shows What Camping in Maine Was Like 100+ Years Ago
Even if you are more of a city person, there is a good chance that you have gone camping at least once in your life.
When I was a kid we made at least a few camping trips each summer. My dad would use our pickup to tow our pop-up camper to Aroostook State Park or Birch Point.
With four of us (mom, dad, my brother, and I), it was a tight fit. And, it should not be a surprise that the camper did not offer many amenities. Basically, it was a couple of bunks, a small table, a gas stove, and a gas fridge. Since the walls were made from canvas, it was a pop-up after all, there really was not much protection from the elements.
Even though it was far from the luxury that you get from one of the newer mansions on wheels, it was still a lot more comfortable than what campers back in the 1920s had.
Recently, I stumbled across a home movie from the 1920s that shows a family camping trip in Maine.
The slides accompanying the silent movie indicate that it is of several families named the Ackleys and the Migis and shows their trip up the Crooked River in Western Maine.
The grainy footage shows the families roughing-it in old-school tents, cooking over a fire, and paddling their way down the river.
