It is time to rip the Band-Aid off for anyone about to experience their first Maine winter such as myself. Just like dating, I want to be aware of all of the red flags and negative qualities so I can prepare appropriately for this 6-month relationship that I am about to commit to. What is the worst that a Maine winter can throw my way?

The best way to figure that out is through Mainers' worst winter experiences, and the reason why asking Mainers is the best route to go was best said by CBS' The Late Show host Stephen Colbert. Thank you to Amber Bussey for reminding us of this quote from Colbert which you can read below and watch in the following video beginning at the 10-minute mark.

And there are very few people like Mainers. I know Mainers. I love Mainers. They're strong people. They've got Moxie. Literally. It's the name of their official state soft drink. It tastes like carbonated cough syrup, but they drink it anyway 'cause Mainers are tough. They are people whose idea of a beach is a collection of jagged rocks near freezing water. Their state flower, the Maine state flower ... and this is true ... is a frickin' pinecone! - Stephen Colbert

Here Are Some of The Worst Maine Winter Experiences Share by You

Let's just get the ice storm of 1998 out of the way because SO MANY of you said that that entire ordeal was the worst Maine winter experience for you, and for good reason. Let's hope we never go through something like that again where trees were so weighed down by ice that they fell over and knocked out power to Mainers for days, and for some, weeks.

Teresa M Hazelton - The amount of cars that go off the road in front of my house. We've had 4 new telephone poles, and God knows how many mailboxes? Since 2002. On the back side of Route 2 in Hermon.

Heather Stewart Brown - I went off the road on the back road to my parents' house in Monson. Thinking a car would pass me sooner or later, I started walking. In dress shoes, I ended up walking 2 miles and almost lost a few toes.

Darlene Moore - When my husband and I went out for our anniversary in the early 90’s. We lived in LaGrange and went to Bangor for dinner and a movie. It was January and we got freezing rain while we were on our way home. We got as far as the Alton woods, just up from Happy Acres, and couldn’t go any farther. Any forward progress just ended with us headed for the ditch. We hadn’t had enough snow to even have snowbanks to stop us. They closed the road down. So, we put the seats back in the Mustang and slept right there in the road until around 5am and the sander truck came (backwards mind you), because he couldn’t move without his own sand. It was quite a night.

Mindy Day - Having lived in Maine my whole life, I can’t think of anything bad. It’s all just how life is living here. You expect the worst, but you just live life. Good or bad it’s Maine where we live.

Chasity Kitchen - My daughter said, when there’s no snow to go snowmobiling.

Paula J Cyr - The storm back in '69 was pretty bad, thank God for wood stoves back then, no power for days, my dad had to snowshoe to the end of our 1/2-mile driveway to get groceries delivered from the store, so much snow for a plow to move it. The ice storm was 2nd but we don't get as much snow as we did as when we were kids.

Desirée Marcellis Stanwood - The two nor’easters we got back-to-back in 2017 in February! Pounded with snow and they couldn’t plow because visibility was so low!
