At approximately 2 p.m., Trooper John Darcy responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Routes 2 and 212 in Smyrna, according to a statement for Trooper Chuck Michaud.

Investigation disclosed that 81-year-old Allen Whitney of Island Falls was driving north on the Oakfield-Smyrna Road in a 2003 Chevy Impala.  Meanwhile, 60-year-old Philip Shields of Dyer Brook was traveling west on Route 2 in a 2010 Dodge Ram.

State Police said Mr. Shields had the right of way and was attempting to make a left hand turn. Mr. Whitney allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of Shield’s truck, nearly causing the vehicle to rollover.

Whitney was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital as a precaution due to chest pains. Mr. Shields refused medical treatment. Both vehicles had to be towed.

Houlton Ambulance, the Oakfield Fire Department, the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Transportation assisted Trooper Darcy at the scene of the crash.
