The Applied Forestry Management program at the University of Maine at Fort Kent recently received reaccreditation by the national accrediting body, the Society of American Foresters.

UMFK Forestry program coordinator, Jeff Dubis, says the program goes through the accreditation process every ten years. He added that this is the first time he has taken the lead in putting the self-study report together.

The accreditation review team visited the campus for two days and Dubis said they were "impressed by what they found," giving kudos to the Forestry program for its advanced curriculum and connection to the industry. The accreditation team met with area industry leaders and the program's Advisory Board to discuss their input.

There are six standards that the review team looks at during an accreditation: curriculum; faculty; students; support from the university; program missions and goals; and programmatic organization. Faculty development and training are also looked at, but are not set standards.

Professor Dubis stated that, "They were very pleased to see that the forestry program recently moved its entire program into its own facility on campus. They were also very pleased by our GIS laboratory and the advanced technology our students are trained in."
