Traffic Cameras Are Officially Being Installed on Maine’s Interstate System
If you are the type who likes to fly under the radar on Maine’s highways, you might want to rethink that game plan. The Maine Department of Transportation has officially announced that traffic cameras are about to start popping up along some of the state’s busiest stretches of road. And no, this is not a drill, this is real, and it is happening soon.
According to the Kennebec Journal, the state is investing nearly nine hundred seventy thousand dollars into a camera installation project that is set to bring watchful eyes to both Interstate 295 and Interstate 95.
On Interstate 295, the installation work is planned for several key exits. The KJ says drivers can expect to see cameras going up near Exit 10 in Falmouth, Exit 15 in Cumberland, and Exit 20 in Freeport.
As for Interstate 95, the camera rollout is happening a bit farther north. Work is scheduled near Exit 109 and Exit 112 in Augusta, Exit 120 in Sidney, Exit 127 and Exit 130 in Waterville, and Exit 133 in Fairfield, the KJ explained. Basically, if you are heading north through central Maine, there is a good chance you are going to pass one of these brand-new traffic cams.
The work is being handled by Electric Light Incorporated, a company based out of Cape Neddick. According to the Department of Transportation, crews will begin the project next week, and the current timeline has them wrapping everything up by October thirtieth.
Whether you see it as a safety upgrade or a little too much Big Brother, these cameras are coming and they are coming fast. So next time you find yourself flying down I-295 or I-95, just remember, someone might be watching, and this time it is not just the guy in the minivan next to you picking his nose in the passing lane.
