103 years ago, on August 25, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed the legislation that created the National Park Service. In honor of its 103rd anniversary, the National Park Service has declared a fee-free day. Every one of the 115 National Parks that charge an entrance fee will be waiving the fee on Sunday, August 25th.

Note, President Teddy Roosevelt didn't created the National Park Service, as many think. He did use  his authority to protect wildlife and public lands by creating the United States Forest Service (USFS) and establishing 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments by enabling the 1906 American Antiquities Act. During his presidency,Theodore Roosevelt protected approximately 230 million acres of public land

With the forecast for Sunday  being mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s, it sounds like a fantastic day to go to Acadia National Park. Just be sure to pack some patience, as I'm pretty sure you'll have lots of company!

If you are going be sure to take the fare free Island Explorer. You can find route information HERE. Sunday August 25th is the last day of the Summer Schedule. On Monday, August 26th, the Island Explorer reverts to it's Fall Schedule
