Maine is lowering the cost of some hard alcoholic beverages due to a change in the way it prices liquor products.

Tim Poulin, deputy director of the state Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, tells the Portland Press Herald Maine has negotiated the price markup for each alcoholic product with the supplier on an individual basis. Suppliers wanted a system with a consistent markup across alcohol varieties of the same type.

The prices of 2,044 products— out of 3,299 total products sold —will remain the same. The prices of 666 will decrease and 589 will increase. Price decreases will outweigh increases for popular products. Many of the prices take effect Feb. 1.

Poulin says the change will cost the state $1.7 million, based on sales ending Nov. 30.
