No matter what the season, New England has many places where you can just get in the car and drive.  Lots of roads are very popular because of the beautiful scenery.  Two places in Maine were named the best road trips in the Country.

HGTV named the 25 most popular road trips that people take for unexpected sights and roadside attractions.  Both these destinations will offer beautiful views along the way.

Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway in Maine is a Fabulous Road Trip

It does not matter what time of year you go to this beautiful part of Maine, however, this is the road to travel to if you want to see fall foliage.  The Scenic Byway is 52 miles long stretch of gorgeous views of lakes and the Appalachian Mountain Ridge line.

Traveling North in Maine isn't North, it's Downeast

It doesn't make any sense, but if you travel up the Maine coast from Kittery to Rockland, your destination is called Downeast.  Route 1 in Kittery is a must stop to start your trip.  My recommendation is some shopping at the Kittery Trading Post, then across the street to Roberts for oysters and martinis.

There is a lot to see and do as you make your way to Rockland / Rockport, but when you get there, make sure to visit the Farnsworth Museum.  The Wyeth family of artists called Downeast home.  Get some culture while your eating your lobster roll.

Speaking of Lobster rolls, you could stop in Wiscasset at Red's for their famous lobster rolls and yes, you'll have to wait in line.  It's just how it is.
