A heart-stopping situation unfolded in the Katahdin Region earlier this week when a young family walking in a field at a local school, found what they believed was a discarded firearm.

The East Millinocket Police Department says the item was discovered in a section of grass on the campus of the Stearns High School / Middle School complex in town.

Not knowing if what they found was loaded or how it got there, the family turned it right into the police.

Authorities have since determined that the weapon was a fake.

"Upon investigation, the weapon was determined not to be a real firearm.

The weapon was a realistic replica.

We are thankful the item was found and it was reported to police so we could properly investigate the item. Officers have been in contact with school officials regarding the incident."

The East Millinocket PD says they are still looking into the matter, to determine where the gun came from and how it ended up in the middle of a school field.
