Maybe it’s the nip in the air, maybe it’s the homeless person I saw walking down the street. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about this time of year that makes me think about helping those in need.

I know I wouldn't want to spend a cold fall night sleeping outside, because I thought it was my only option. This post is about raising awareness. There are people right here in our area that do spend the night outside, under a bridge, or sleep in someone’s garden shed because they are homeless.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter the circumstance around why someone is homeless, what matters is that we do everything in our power to help those who are down on their luck, whether it be donating monetarily or by volunteering our time.

In 2011 over 220 individuals and family members stayed at the Sister Mary O’Donnell Homeless Shelter in Presque Isle. Over a quarter of those people were children. Over 85% of the shelter’s residents are Mainers with more than 71% native to Aroostook County. Almost half of all residents fall into the 18-30 year old age bracket. 59% of all residents are male and 41% female.

Homelessness does not discriminate against age, sex or race. It could happen to anyone. Some people lose their job unexpectedly, then their house because they can’t afford to pay for. Some lose their homes to fire and have nowhere else to turn.

Homeless Services of Aroostook is here to help those who have fallen and need some help getting back up. Our neighbors need a helping hand. You can help, just by donating cleaning supplies, paper goods, or even monetarily. The need is certainly real. Donated items can be mailed or dropped off at the homeless shelter, 745 Central Drive in Presque Isle.
