In an attempt to keep Maine roadways safe during the busy tourist season, state police say they are assisting their ground patrols by putting a little additional support in the sky.

According to a news release, the Department of Public Safety plans to utilize aircraft this summer as a means for controlling speeding motorists along Interstate 95 and Interstate 295.

Stephen McCausland, a spokesperson for the DPS says that the typical protocol for busting speeding motorists is for the clocking officer to radio ahead to coordinate a traffic stop. The same system works when employing the use of aircraft, he says.

Main State Police urge motorists to be cautious of posted speed limits along all of the state’s roadways.
