Maine and NH Towns Rank High on a New List of Funny Town Names
In the lands of hiking trails, ski resorts, and lobster rolls now comes some accidental comedy. According to Parade, both Maine and New Hampshire landed spots on the list of 75 Funny Town Names in the U.S., and the winners are… Meddybemps, Bald Head, and Dummer. That’s not a weird law firm—it’s just New England doing what it does best: being oddly charming and slightly ridiculous.
Ever heard of any of those towns? Me neither. Let's dive in....
Meddybemps, Maine sounds like something you’d name a cartoon frog, but nope—it’s a real town in Washington County with a population of about 139 people, according to Wikipedia, and a whole lotta lake. It’s the kind of place where everyone probably knows your dog’s name and your business. And if you're wondering where the name came from—join the club.
Bald Head, Maine doesn't appear to be an actual town, it's more of a village in York that sits right on the coast. According to Wikipedia, the community takes its name from a nearby rock formation known as Bald Head Cliff, which shares the same distinctive name. If you go bald and move there, I think you get a discount on property taxes. (Don't quote me.)
Dummer, New Hampshire is a tiny town way up north in Coös County, and yes, that’s how it’s spelled – there’s some irony at its finest for you. According to Wikipedia, it's named after Massachusetts governor William Dummer—so no, it’s not an insult, it’s historical, and kind of funny.
Some other honorable New England mentions from Parade's list of 75 Funny Town Names in the US include Rice City, Rhode Island and Happyland, Connecticut. Check out the full list here.
