It's not easy being a variety late night talk show host in the state of Maine, especially when it's illegal in your state to advertise using a billboard.

The Nite Show with Danny Cashman found a way to advertise for the show on a busy highway in a large city far from the quaint Bangor, Maine studios, where the show is filmed. Why? To make the dreams of a staff member of the show come true.

Dan Cashman, host of the weekly, half-hour program filmed in Bangor, Maine and broadcast across the state of Maine on Saturdays, explains that a staff member of the show really wanted to advertise the program with a billboard. Unfortunately, the state of Maine does not permit this kind of advertising. The staff member, however, remained persistent to want to advertise the show using this marketing option.

Cashman further explains the story:

We befriended the only other similar local late night talk show in the country we could find, called Tonight In San Diego. In an effort to prove a point [to the staff member] and make a joke at the same time, we decided to follow the advice of our show business friend and buy billboard space in San Diego.

Cashman explains further that the show was looking to purchase advertising space in San Diego that would be an unusual location, an out-of-the-way spot that San Diegans wouldn't even really be aware of the billboard. "What we got was something right in the middle of the city, overlooking a major roadway, yet positioned in a residential neighborhood," Cashman says. "So every morning, some lucky San Diego residents get to wake up and wonder why the hell we are promoting a Maine television show in Southern California."

The billboard features an image of the state of Maine, a goofy-grinned Dan Cashman sitting at his signature desk and the following words looming above him: "Local Guests.  Local Music. Local Awkward Silence."
