How to Protect Your Pup from Parvovirus in Maine
Those of us who have dogs, understand that they are part of the family. Yes, Moondog gets grilled chicken for dinner and I brush his hair each night while I sing him his favorite song.
Our dogs, own our hearts and when there is something that we need to know as pup parents, are ears pop up.
Right now, dog owners are being warned to take precautions after a recent increase in canine parvovirus cases. It has recently been confirmed statewide according to WGME.
Parvovirus is extremely contagious, can survive through Maine winters and is very resilient. Right now, Houlton Police report that several dogs have tested positive and has spread to the Bangor area as well.
The Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic, located in Brewer has reported an uptick in Bangor as well.
I know what your thinking, how do we stop this from reaching your pup.
A fully vaccinated for parvo means:-gotten the full 3 rounds of puppy vaccines-received the 1 year booster at 12 months of age-continues to get vaccinated for parvo per vaccine guidelines ( every 1 to 3 years)*** and at least 2 to 3 weeks since the FINAL vaccine has passed. Immunity is not instant***
This virus is nothing to joke with because it can stick around for months in spots like kennels, dog parks, or even on bowls or surfaces your pup comes in contact with.
What does the parvovirus do to your dogs?
Parvo attacks a canine’s white blood cells and gastrointestinal tract. If it gets to a puppy, it can hurt their hearts as well.
The symptoms will show extremely fast and cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and dehydration. And if you don’t get your dog treatment, parvo can be fatal, quickly.
