The state office has received nine recount applications from political candidates. The candidates are asking the state to recount the ballots in their respective districts.

The Department of Public Safety will oversee the recount of the ballots. According to the state law, the state police need to collect all recount ballots and store them in a secure police facility until the recounting has been completed.

The ballots will be reviewed manually to determine the official vote tally. If a recount produces enough disputed ballots to affect the outcome of the election, the Maine House of Representatives would determine which candidate to seat in House races. The Maine State Senate would determine which candidate to seat in State Senate races. The Supreme Judicial Court would make a determination in County races and in Statewide Referenda.
