Gov. Paul LePage secured a second-term early Wednesday, turning back a challenge from Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud who promised to work to restore civility to politics.

Independent Eliot Cutler trailed in a distant third.

Elsewhere, Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree brushed aside their challengers to easily win re-election Tuesday.

But the race between Democrat Emily Cain and Republican Bruce Poliquin for the open seat in the 2nd Congressional District was too close to call.

Election Day dawned with tens of thousands of Mainers in the dark and state officials worked to ensure that even those without power could cast votes Tuesday.
