A New Hampshire Restaurant Makes You Sign a Waiver Before You Eat This Blazing Hot Spice
Dave's Hot Chicken, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
This is my first experience with Dave's Hot Chicken, y'all. (I'm not Southern, but I feel like it fits here) There are two locations in New Hampshire, one in Manchester and one in Portsmouth. They also have 9 locations in Massachusetts, including 2 in Boston.
Dave's has absolutely delicious chicken for all kinds of people and they especially cater to those who like it spicy, but before you run to the restaurant, you might want to keep in mind that they will make you sign a waiver that it was YOUR CHOICE to order, "REAPER" spice level. Basically, consume this at your own risk, that's how hot it is.
Davie Wick of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire location brought in some delicious chicken nuggets, a/k/a Dave's Bites, with mild sauce. These nuggets are relatively new to the restaurant and they were absolutely delicious. There were a lot of them and I didn't even want to share. (I eventually did with my co-workers, but it took some prodding.)
Davie then served us some chicken that had a sticker on it that said, "REAPER." I was about to take a big bite out of it, but Davie said I should probably not take a huge bite at first because it's really, really hot. I'm no wimp, but the look in his eye was serious, so I heeded his warning. My co-worker, Ryan Sheehy, however, did not.
Ryan took a big bite of the "REAPER" spiced sandwich and it first, he looked okay. But about 30 seconds later, his eyes started to water, he got the hiccups and his lips were burning. He said that it was "not enjoyable."
Davie, not the Dave from Dave's Hot Chicken, then said that they make their customers SIGN A WAIVER before they eat anything with REAPER level spice. Yup, you have to sign a waiver stating that it was your own damn fault if you have a reaction to the spice.
After seeing Ryan's reaction, I decided to take a significantly smaller bite. I seemed to be fine. My tongue was burning, but I was going to be okay. I might go back for another baby bite, but if I'm honest, I'll stick to the boneless chicken nuggets.
The part I really could have done without was when I accidentally touched my eye after I had that one bite. Here I am with our friend Rachel who loves Dave's Hot Chicken. We are seen here recuperating.
Next time I got to Dave's, I think I am going to get this bad boy... with mild spice.
I'm not sure why anyone would actually enjoy that level of spice. The food at Dave's is delicious, why would I want anything to distract that, but as I like to say, I'm not the boss of you. You do you and good luck after all that spice goes through you.
