Two Mainers Charged After Using Counterfeit Bills for Bail
Do people actually think they're usually smarter than the police?
I know that's a bit of a rhetorical question, but on the other hand, it happens. But I always wonder, why does one person think they can always outsmart a team of people? Or why do they try to outwit an organization whose sole purpose is dedicated to one thing? Chances are, when it's just you against all of them, you're going to lose.

I mean, I've watched enough true crime docs at this point to realize that you've got to be someone pretty clever to fool police detectives, even for a short amount of time. But occasionally you run into folks who, one can assume anyway, think they're going to get away with something you'd see on the worst sitcoms on TV.
Enter: These folks from Rockland...
Crime is one of those things that you can try and plan to the best of your ability. But there's often so many things to account for, you'll likely fail. If it was so easy, people would rob banks left and right. Con-artists are always caught, at some point. So why would these folks in Rockland think they could pass fake money off to police?
According to WABI, via the PenBay Pilot, a woman tried to pay her sister's bail. When officers deposited the cash, the bank let them know it was counterfeit. It's almost humorous that it got by authorities in the first place, as the money had the word "copy" printed right on it, in the left-hand corner.
What kind of charges do these folks face?
Jessica Gray, claimed to have no idea the money was fake, and said she got it from a man named Gary Gilbert, who also claimed he had no idea the money was fake. Since the word "copy" was printed right on the bills, it seems unlikely. On the other hand, it made it all the way out of the police's hands and into the bank...

Both have been charged with aggravated forgery, and Gilbert faces additional charges as well, stemming from bail condition violations. And while everyone is innocent until proven guilty, there's almost a tragic comedy here. I mean, imagine trying to pay bail... with fake money. You can't make this stuff up...
