Maine’s Halloween Kids Have It So Much Better

I'm so envious of kids who get to enjoy Halloween all month, instead of the one-day celebration it was when I was growing up.

Halloween in Maine Used to Consist of One Evening, Not a Whole Month

I can't be the only one feeling this way.

When I was growing up, Halloween was only one night.

Parents didn't want to spend a lot of money on your costume for two reasons:

1. You would only wear it for an hour or two
2. It's so cold in late October that you'd probably wear a coat over it anyway.

So we would dig out the box of past costumes and try to piece something together for the new year.

Maine Trunk or Treat Events Have Changed the Landscape of Halloween

Now, children get to wear their Halloween costumes all month long, so their parents don't mind spending a little more.

They'll wear them over and over all month as they attend trunk-or-treat events.

Maybe they'll even go to Pumpkins in the Park at the Anah Shrine, where they don't have to wear coats.

Then there's the Halloween Glow Party at the Ferris Community Center Complex in Brewer.

My coworkers and I will also take part in a Trunk or Treat event again this year, across the street from the Brewer Community School.

Maine's Month-Long Halloween Celebrations Make Parents Envious

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the new month-long Halloween celebrations.

In fact, I love it.

I am pretty jealous that we didn't think of it when I was a kid, so I could've worn that costume more than once.

I'll have to drown my sorrows in a bag of Halloween candy, wearing my costume, and watching Charlie Brown get another rock.
