Both are discount variety stores with thousands of locations all over the country, including dozens of locations in Maine.

With such a heavy footprint, it makes you (or possibly just me) wonder: Which of these chains has the most stores in Maine?

How many Dollar General Stores Are in Maine?

According to the Dollar General website, the first store opened in Springfield, Kentucky, in 1955. The company focuses on serving customers with low prices on items including food, apparel, houseware, and more.

As of May 8, 2025, the Dollar General store locator showed 71 locations in Maine.

How many Dollar Tree Stores Are in Maine?

According to the Dollar Tree website, the first store opened in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1959. The company also offers customers a variety of items for a low value, but has a primary price point of $1.25.

DollarTree.com showed there are 36 Dollar Tree stores in Maine.

So it's Dollar General leading the way with the most stores in Maine.

Dollar Store Heaven in Portland, Maine

When I was living in the Portland neighborhood of North Deering, I would sometimes complain that there weren't enough gas stations.

However, there were two dollar stores situated nearly across the street from one another, competing for the business of those who lived and/or worked in the area.

Meanwhile, the nearby Cumberland Farms was packed full of people with things to do, but sometimes not enough open registers to get people out of there right away.

Ah, those were the days.
