IRS Owes More Than $4 Million to Maine Taxpayers: Are You One of Them?
With the deadline to file federal taxes fast approaching, thousands of Mainers still haven't submitted theirs yet.
According to an article published by WGME 13, the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says they're showing a whopping $4,000,000 in cash returns are still owed to thousands of Mainers across the state.
Why exactly is this the case? Well, quite simply, because thousands of Mainers did not actually file their 2020 taxes. As a matter of fact, because of unfiled 2020 taxes, the IRS owes over $1,000,000,000 (that's a billion!) to more than 900,000 people across the country.
In Maine, the IRS says that there are 3,800 Mainers that are owed just over $4,000,000 in total from the 2020 tax season. That equates to just over $1,000 per person. So yes, you could be missing out on cash money that you're entitled to.
If you didn't file your 2020 taxes yet, don't worry, you're not going to go to prison. I mean, at least not yet anyway. If you don't remember, federal tax filings in 2020, because of the COVID pandemic, were postponed until May 17th, 2024- so you still have some time.
So if you're one of the thousands of Mainers who have been putting off filing your 'COVID' taxes, or you just forgot, it may behoove you to get it done sooner rather than later so you can potentially claim your share of the $4,000,000 bucks that the IRS is trying to get rid of.
