Maine State Police are investigating an apparent suicide of an inmate at the Aroostook  County Jail in Houlton.

Chief Deputy Darrell Crandall of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said today that corrections officers found a 31-year-old man inmate hanging in his cell at around 1:30 a.m. this morning.

Corrections officers tried to revive him. He was then taken to Houlton Regional Hospital via ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased inmate has been identified as 31-year-old Kirk Sharp. Sharp was arrested last Thursday by State Police for domestic violence assault. His last known address was in the Mars Hill and Castle Hill area.
