The Aroostook County Sheriff's Office responded to  the crash shortly before 5 p.m., according to Sheriff Darrell Crandall.

Deputy Reid Clark determined that 51-year-old James Gardiner of Mapleton was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe west on the Mapleton Road when he crossed the center line and went off the road. The SUV missed a telephone pole and a tree before crashing into a home.

Crandall said the homeowner was inside the residence at the time but was not injured. Gardiner, who was alone in the vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt, was transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The Tahoe and the home both sustained extensive damage, Crandall said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Deputy Clark was assisted by Maine State Trooper Adam Stoutamyer and the Mapleton-Castle Hill-Chapman Fire Department.
