Something pretty neat is going to be happening in Houlton in the coming weeks.  The Houlton Police Department will be holding a Citizen Police Academy.

Wondering what that might be? Pretty simple really. The purpose is to promote better understanding to the attendees so that they may possess greater insight into police practices and the services that the Houlton Police Department provides. It is the hope that graduates of the Academy can share their knowledge and experiences with the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits from enhancing citizen and community understanding of the role and function of their police department.

The Academy tries to cover just about all areas of the police department including (but not limited to) Traffic, Criminal Investigations, Drug Enforcement, Dispatch, Patrol, etc. with emphasis on the Patrol Division as they are the ones that the public comes into contact with most often.

Houlton’s next Citizen Police Academy will begin on Thursday, March 14, 2013. Classes will meet on Thursday evenings for ten consecutive weeks at the Houlton Police Department, 97 Military Street, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The academy is free and open to all Houlton residents and persons employed in Houlton that are 18 years of age or older. Ages 16 and 17 may attend if permitted by parents or guardians, or accompanied by an adult. All applications must be received by March 8, 2013.

If you live in Houlton, I’d encourage you to get signed up and attend!
