Alright, with that in mind—not to sound dramatic—but when are we actually ‘allowed’ to start celebrating the holidays?

However, Balsam Hill suggests considering a few factors before putting up your Christmas tree.

For a real tree, it’s often best to wait until early December, as these trees typically last around four weeks and can shed needles if set up too early. If you’re using an artificial tree, you have more flexibility since it stays fresh-looking no matter when you decide to decorate.

Plus, here in Maine, folks experience seasonal depression at a generally higher rate than in other parts of the country.

Many of us experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that hits at the same time each year and affects us at a higher rate than in other parts of the country. Our winters feel endless, and the short days mean we often miss out on the sunlight we need. So why not let us enjoy the holiday season a little longer to keep our spirits up?

Of course, there aren’t any laws dictating what you can and can’t do with your Christmas tree. However, there are laws about what you do with the lights outside your home.

Maine has a light trespass law that prevents outdoor lighting from one property from intruding on neighboring properties or public areas. This means your festive lights or decorations are fine, as long as they don't spill over onto someone else's space.
