Why the recall?

As per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these donuts are being pulled from the shelves due to potential listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of listeria and as per the CDC, listeria is actually the third leading cause of foodborne illness deaths in the United States.

This bacteria has affected about 1,600 people yearly and causing around 260 deaths, as per People.

What is listeria?

Listeria, putting it simply, is a germ that contaminates food.  As per the CDC, this bacteria can cause invasive illness and intestinal illness. And because of this donut disruption, the health authorities are on the case!

What does the recall include?

According to the article, there are 60 varieties of dessert being pulled including, crullers, munchkins, cake rings, fritters, and paczki.

Get this, the donuts produced before December 13th 2024, were sold at grocery stories all throughout the United States with some even showing up at Dunkin locations.

As per the article, it's important to know that the bacteria can cause serious health issues, especially for pregnant women, newborns, older adults and folks with weak immune systems.

How do I know if I bought contaminated products?

A statement was put out by the company stating that all donuts are currently safe to eat saying in part,

"Food safety is our top priority. ..voluntary recall was completed over a month ago ... and does not implicate anything that is currently, or was recently, on the market" and that "all donuts are completely safe to eat."

To be safe, check the brand. The recall started January 7th and was upgraded February 5th, but the company says it was completed over a month ago and does not affect current products.

If you have older doughnuts, verify them with the FDA recall list.

I would postpone my morning donut just for a little while, to be safe. Make sure you are checking your labels and reading the updated information on recalls.
