Interim head coach Nick Derba will shed the tag 'interim' and get the new title 'head coach' of UMaine baseball. He becomes the 25th coach in Black Bear baseball history.

"We're excited to announce Nick Derba as head baseball coach. Nick proved himself this season as interim head coach and in the national search process that began after the season ended and attracted a large group of highly qualified candidates. We are confident in Nick's ability to recruit and coach high-caliber student-athletes who will be champions in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Thank you to our search committee and our campus partners who helped conduct a thorough and efficient search." - Statement from UMaine AD Karlton Creech

Derba has been an assistant coach for the Black Bears for the past four years. When Steve Trimper left in December to take the Stetson University coaching job, Derba was named interim head coach.

He led the team to a 25-29 record, including an America East Conference Tournament run that finished with a loss in the championship round to UMaryland Baltimore County.

Derba, who is 31-years-old, played his college ball at Manhatten University. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and played in their minor league system for six seasons.
