Eighty-one-year-old Donald Scott and his wife 78-year-old Vera Scott of New Limerick were traveling west around 1 p.m. Friday when their 2005 Chrysler van left the road, struck a tree and rolled onto its side, according to a press release from Trooper Chuck Michaud.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott were trapped in the vehicle for some time, Michaud said. They were transported by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital with serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening .

A dog that was in the van was taken to a veterinarian in Presque Isle by a Good Samaritan to be evaluated, Michaud said.

The investigation determined that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Speed was not a factor in the crash, police said. Mr. Scott was wearing a seat belt; his wife was not.

Maine State Trooper John Darcy responded to Friday's accident. The Oakfield Fire Department, Houlton Ambulance and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office also were called to the crash site in Smyrna.
