College Roundup: Bears Sweep, Eagles Split
UMaine junior pitcher Justin Courtney pitched eight innings of two hit, shutout ball and the Black Bears scored a run in the bottom of the 9th inning on a wild pitch to start a Saturday sweep of the Hartford Hawks at Mahaney Diamond.
GAME ONE: UMaine 1 Hartford 0 Courtney battled with Hawks starter Brian Stepniak who pitched seven innings of shutout ball. Cody Lawyerson pitched the 9th inning for Maine and with the game scoreless, Tyler Schwanz walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch to win it.
GAME TWO: UMaine 3 Hartford 2 After both teams scored twice in the 1st inning, the Black Bears grabbed the lead for good in the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly. Josh Normandeau John Gelinas combined on the hill to get the seven inning win.
UMaine improves to 9-15 (3-2 AE). Hartford is now 7-16 and 1-4.
NOTE: UMaine softball swept its doubleheader at Hartford, winning 7-6 and 6-2. The Black Bears improve to 7-17 (2-0 AE).
In the North Atlantic Conference, the Husson Eagles and Colby-Sawyer Chargers split a twinbill as both teams jumped on the other each early in a game to get a win.
GAME ONE: Husson 7 Colby-Sawyer 2 Senior pitcher Ben Walls improved his record to 4-0 with six innings of one run ball. Meanwhile, his teammates scored six times in the 1st inning. Logan Rogerson, Christian Corneil and Luke Covey all had two hits for the Eagles.
GAME TWO: Colby-Sawyer 8 Husson 1 The Chargers jumped on Eagles pitcher Tommy Burns for six runs in the first two innings and never let Husson back in the game. Michale Fazio pitched a seven inning complete game for the win.
Husson is now 10-8 (4-2 NAC) with two more games Sunday vs the Chargers.
NOTE: The Husson softball team swept an out-of-conference doubleheader vs Fisher College, winning 8-3 and 7-0. The Eagles are now 14-8.
