Memorial Day weekend is coming a day early for fans of people running on beaches in slow motion: Paramount announced today that Baywatch is opening in theaters a day early, on Thursday, May 25 (so technically that Wednesday night), instead of the 26th.

Deadline mentions the fact that Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is also opening that same weekend, so a head start certainly couldn’t hurt Baywatch’s box office chances. Plus, Baywatch is rated R, as opposed to Pirates’ more accessible PG-13.

Deadline also notes that Paramount could be doing some damage control, or at least trying to make back some of what they’re losing on Ghost in the Shell. That movie, whether because of the controversy surrounding it or just because no one was particularly interested in it, didn’t exactly run away with the box office, and stands to lose about $60 million. That’s money Baywatch could make part of back if it’s a hit, and extending its opening weekend another day gives it a shot at the top B.O. spot.

BAYWATCH follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
