Alaska Man Faces Hefty Fine For Feeding a Moose
If you give mouse a cookie, he is bound to want some milk. But if you give a moose a carrot, you could pay a big fine.
That's what 47-year-old Paul Cocker of Wasilla, Alaska found out this week after he posted a video on Facebook of himself feeding a moose in his yard. Cocker, a U.S. Navy veteran, narrated the video while he lured a moose closer to him and hand-fed it a carrot.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska State Police received a complaint after someone alerted them to Cocker's Facebook post. He was issued a $310 fine for feeding wildlife. Cocker has the option of appearing in court to contest the charge.
Bill Collins, a physiologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said feeding moose can break down the distance that the animal typically keeps from humans, a potentially dangerous consequence.
