This event will create a dialogue on setting and achieving career goals with 85 youth with a disability from around Atlantic Canada, along with their families and caregivers.

Highlights of the summit include career exploration; post-secondary supports and options; independent living; creating healthy relationships; and successful transition to work.

This effort aims to dispel the myth that many persons with a disability are not employable. The goal is for participants to begin developing their own career goals, along with a plan to achieve these goals.

The Moncton summit will also provide opportunities for young people with disabilities to meet and connect with others who are facing the same issues.

Presenters include the well-known Canadian actress Mary Walsh and breakdancer Luca “Lazy Legs” Patuelli, along with many others from across Atlantic Canada with inspirational messages and success stories of how they moved beyond their disability into meaningful employment and much deeper connections with their communities.

The council and the NB Disability Executive’s Network are also contributors to this event.

“The Premier’s Council on the Status of Disabled Persons offers its appreciation and congratulations to Muscular Dystrophy Canada and its New Brunswick office on organizing the Youth in Action Atlantic Summit,” said Christyne Allain, the council’s executive director. “We urge all those able to participate or to spread the word about this important event to please do so.”

Funding is being provided by the provincial government through the Department of Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour.

More information about the summit, including registration which is open until July 19, is available online.
