Police say a 47-year-old woman has died and a 48-year-old man was seriously injured in a collision involving two motorcycles and an SUV in Shippagan, N.B.

The Northeast District RCMP responded to call of a collision on J.D. Gauthier Boulevard around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators believe the SUV travelling northbound was making a left hand turn onto Rue Habitat and collided with a motorcycle travelling south. A second motorcycle travelling behind the first motorcycle lost control attempting to avoid the collision.

The driver of the first motorcycle, a 47-year-old woman from Haut-Shippagan, died at the scene as a result of her injuries. The driver of the second motorcycle, a 48-year-old man from Haut-Shippagan, N.B., was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The two occupants of the SUV were not injured in the crash.

An accident reconstructionist attended the scene. RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.
