Maine State Police say Dawn Theriault, 44, of Littleton was driving her 2002 Lincoln sedan north on Route 1 shortly after 12:30 a.m. Theriault did not see a horse that was in the roadway and struck the animal, according to Corporal Dennis Quint.

Theriault was transported by Houlton Ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital with glass in her eyes and cuts to her face. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening, Quint said.

The horse was killed in the crash and had to be removed from the roadway. The owner of the horse, Jessica York of Houlton, told police she was not sure how the animal had escaped from its fenced area.

The car was towed from the scene by York’s of Houlton.

The crash is being investigated by Trooper Eric Sucy. Trooper Sucy was assisted at the scene by Corporal Dennis Quint and Trooper Recruit Matthew Curtin.
