Winthrop Teen Accused Of Killing Parents Ordered To Undergo Psychological Evaluation

A psychological evaluation has been ordered for a 17-year-old Winthrop boy accused of killing his parents early Monday morning.

Andrew Balcer appeared in court on Tuesday.

He faces two counts of knowing or intentional murder, according to court documents.

The documents did not say how the boy's parents were killed.

Police discovered the bodies of Antonio and Alice Balcer, both 47, when they were called to the family's Pine Knoll Road home at about 1:45 a.m.

The Portland Press Herald reports Walter McKee, the boy's attorney, did not object to the state’s request for a psychological evaluation, which is required since Assistant Attorney General Megan Elam has requested a hearing to determine if the boy can be tried as an adult.

Andrew Balcer remains at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

The next court hearing is set for Nov. 17. at 1 p.m.
