A 69-year-old Washburn man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Route 164 in Crouseville late Thursday afternoon.

Washburn Police Chief Roy Guidry tells us the driver, Joseph Nadeau of Washburn lost control of his Chevy Impala, went off the road, down an embankment and struck several trees.

Washburn Police, along with Washburn Fire & Rescue, Crown Ambulance and Maine State Police responded to the crash around 5 p.m. The Jaws of Life were used to remove the man from the vehicle.

Chief Guidry said Nadeau suffered severe head injuries and was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, and then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was reported to be in stable condition on Friday morning.

Police say Nadeau was wearing a seat belt and the airbags deployed in the crash. The car was a total loss and was pulled out by Impact Auto.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
