ROME, Maine (AP) — The Maine Warden Service believes a medical event could've preceded the death of a man found alongside a hiking trail in the town of Rome.

Wardens initially thought 57-year-old Brian Peters could've succumbed to the elements but they now say he was well prepared for hiking and had good communication with his family.

The state medical examiners' office will be evaluating the case.

The Mount Vernon man was snowshoeing to the summit Round Top Mountain in Rome. He was last seen Thursday afternoon, and his body was found that night. Temperatures ranged from the teens to the 20s. The wind chill made it feel much colder.
