Wabanaki Women’s Coalition Receives $337,000 Grant

The Wabanaki Women’s Coalition has received a total of nearly $337,000 to expand domestic violence and sexual assault services for individuals in Aroostook, Penobscot and Washington Counties.

U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced the grant from the Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.

“The Wabanaki Women’s Coalition is a vital resource for members of Maine’s Native American communities,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This grant will help the Coalition enhance tribal communities’ ability to respond to sexual assault and domestic violence, advocate for victims of these crimes, and ensure that victims receive necessary care.”

The Wabanaki Women’s Coalition is comprised of five tribal communities in Maine: Aroostook Band of Micmacs, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Indian Township Passamaquoddy, Penobscot Indian Nation, and Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy.
