By Memorial Day 1943, more than 300 young men had been drafted from the small Aroostook County town of Ashland to serve in World War II. The town had fewer than 1,000 residents, so the Memorial Day ceremonies that year featured few young soldiers. John Collier took this series of photos in Ashland for the Office of War Information.
