The following is a statement from Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton: 

On June 4, 2016 at 5:15 pm the Penobscot Regional Communication Center received a call reporting that a child had been attacked by a dog at 207 Moody Mills Road in Corinna.

Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputies, Dexter Police Department, Mayo Ambulance and Corinna Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Hunter Bragg, age 7, of Bangor was pronounced deceased after being attacked by an adult male pit bull dog. Hunter was playing in the yard with two other children when the attack occurred. Hunter's father Jason Bragg, 35, was at the residence at the time of the attack.

The dog is owned by Gary Merchant, 45, of 207 Moody Mills Road in Corinna.

Following the attack the owner requested the dog be euthanized by an area veterinarian.

No other people were injured during the incident.

Hunter was a student at the Down East Community School in Bangor. School officials were made aware of the incident allowing for proper notification of teachers and fellow students.

This incident remains an active investigation by Penobscot County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigative Division.
