Horseback Riding with Horse Island Camp

Peaks Island, Maine

Peaks Island is one of the most visited islands in Casco Bay. Tourists and locals alike love this adorable little island just a quick ferry ride away from the big city of Portland. You've probably heard about the bike rental shop, and the golf cart tours, and the on-foot exploring you can do at Battery Steele. You may not know that Peaks Island can be experienced from a totally different view -- between the ears of your noble steed on horseback, thanks to Horse Island Camp.

The owner of Horse Island Camp, Jeanie, has always loved horses. She grew up dreaming of being around horses but as one of nine kids, she never had the opportunity. Jeanie started the camp when he daughter's Brownie Troop began horseback riding lessons for a badge. She didn't want the lessons to end, and the lesson horse just happened to be for sale, so mom of the year Jeanie scooped up the horse and added more to her herd later that year.

When her childhood home on Peaks Island went for sale, Jeanie purchased the house and moved back to the island. She opened Horse Island Camp in 1998 and runs the camp during summer vacations.
