Longtime Maine basketball coach Gavin Kane is headed north to take on his next hoops challenge. He has been named UMaine Presque Isle women's coach, repalcing Traci Halvorson.

Kane is #3 on Maine's all-time high school coaches win list with 525, trailing only Dick Barstow, IJ Pinkham and Roger Reed. He is perhaps best known for his years at Dirigo HS in Dixfield where his girls program won 11 consecutive Western Maine regional titles and six state titles.

Kane has also coached at Rangeley, Spruce Mountain HS and at Mt. Blue.

Then there is the college resume. He was an assistant coach for the UMaine Black Bears under head coach Cindy Blodgett and he worked as an assistant coach at UMaine Farmington.

The UMPI Owls finished with an 8-16 record last season. The Presque Isle campus of the UMaine system plays NCAA D-III and is a member of the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association).
