A good news, bad news Saturday for UMaine basketball. The women had a laugher win over UMBC while the men lost a toughie at the Expo in Portland.

In Baltimore, MD, the UM women's team put the hammer down on UMaryland-Baltimore County 72-38. The Bears had travel issues getting to Baltimore because of the snow storm. Perhaps they took it out on the Retrievers.

Bella Swan lead Maine with 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting. She played just 27 minutes.

In fact, 10 Black Bear players got into the scoring act. Sigi Koizar with 11 and Liz Wood with 10.

The win was the 18th of the year, now 18-7 overall (9-1 AE).

At the Portland Expo, the UM men's team lost a back-and-forth battle with UMBC 83-79. The game had 10 lead changes and seven ties.

But Maine had no answers for UMBC guard Jairus Lyles. He scored 37 points in 39 minutes (14-for-19 FG, 3-for-5 3's).

It seemed the Retrievers warmed up to the Expo floor better than the Bears. UMBC shot 60% (40% on three-pointers). Maine was 42% and 26%.

Maine had four guys in double digit scoring - Aaron Calixte 18, Kevin Little and Devine Eke 13 and Isaac Vann 12.

The Black Bears fall to 8-15 overall (4-6 AE).
